Yesterday's visit to Sandhammaren Beach on Österlen was nothing short of magical. With its vast sands and large dunes, this nature reserve is a gem on the southern coast of Sweden. Sandhammaren is renowned for its silky white sand, often compared to the best beaches in the Caribbean. It’s no wonder it has been voted Sweden’s best beach multiple times.
Getting There and Parking Tips
Sandhammaren is a popular destination, especially during the summer months. To ensure a parking spot, it’s best to arrive either early in the morning or later in the afternoon when families with younger children start heading home. We opted for the latter, which worked out perfectly.
Starting Our Adventure: Sandhammarens Fyr
Our adventure began with a leisurely stroll by Sandhammarens Fyr, the old lighthouse. This historic lighthouse, dating back to the 1860s, stands as a sentinel over the treacherous waters that once made this area notorious among sailors. The shifting sands and strong currents have claimed many ships over the years, making this stretch of coast one of Sweden’s largest ship graveyards.
A Glimpse into Maritime History
Across the road from the lighthouse is a fascinating museum dedicated to sea rescuing in the old days. The museum houses Sweden’s first lifeboat and offers a glimpse into the perilous lives of sailors and the brave efforts of rescuers. It’s a poignant reminder of the dangers that once lurked beneath the serene surface of the sea.
Indulging in a Sweet Treat
After our historical detour, we treated ourselves to some delicious ice cream at the cozy café and diner, Sandhamamrens Fyrgrill, located at the entrance to the beach. With its charming ambiance, this place provides the perfect spot to relax and enjoy a treats before heading down to the beach.
Relaxing on the Beach
The afternoon was spent basking in the sun and cooling off with refreshing swims in the clear, inviting waters. The beach stretches for miles, offering plenty of space to find a quiet spot to lay down our towels and soak up the sun. The fine, powdery sand felt wonderful underfoot, and the gentle sound of the waves added to the tranquil atmosphere.
Exploring Nearby Attractions
Before our beach afternoon, we took a scenic drive through the Österlen countryside, which is known for it's abundance of delightful stores. We stopped at Karl-Fredrik på Eklaholm and Reunion Home, both of which offer a lovely range of interior design items, perfect for anyone looking to bring a touch of summerly charm into their home.
More to Explore in the Area
A daytrip to Sandhammaren is not just about the beach. The surrounding area is rich with attractions and activities. Art galleries, restaurants, and cafés abound, offering plenty of options for dining and cultural experiences. A visit to Dag Hammarskjöld’s Backåkra, the former UN Secretary-General’s retreat, provides a serene and reflective experience. Kåseberga and the ancient Ales Stenar, a megalithic monument, are also nearby and well worth a visit.
The Beauty of Sandhammaren
Sandhammaren’s beauty lies not only in its stunning beach but also in its diverse natural environment. The beach is part of a larger nature reserve that includes inland pine forests and sand dunes. This area is home to a variety of wildlife, particularly birds, making it a great spot for nature enthusiasts.
Practical Tips for Visitors
- Parking: As mentioned, arrive early or later in the afternoon to secure a parking spot.
