This summer, we decided to explore one of Helsingborg's most iconic landmarks – Kärnan. The medieval tower, which has stood watch over the city for centuries, offered both an educational and refreshing experience.
The History of Kärnan
Kärnan is a well-preserved castle built during the first half of the 14th century. The tower was part of Helsingborg Castle, which was one of the strongest fortresses in the Nordic region in its time. Kärnan was constructed as a defense tower and strategically placed to monitor the Öresund Strait, the vital waterway between Denmark and Sweden. Throughout the centuries, the tower has witnessed many historical events and conflicts between the Nordic countries.
In the 17th century, after the Danish-Swedish wars, the castle and Kärnan began to lose their military strategic importance. The castle was demolished, but Kärnan remained and has since become a symbol of Helsingborg's rich history.
A Tower With a Wiew
We began our visit by climbing the 146 steps leading to the top of Kärnan. Several of the tower's floors function as museums and offer exhibitions about the tower's and the city's history. It was fascinating to learn more about how the tower was used over the years and to see historical artifacts.
When we finally reached the top of the tower, we were rewarded with a fantastic view. We could see the entire city of Helsingborg, the Öresund Strait, and even Helsingør in Denmark on the horizon. It was truly a breathtaking sight that gave us a sense of the passage of time and history.
A Leisurely Afternoon in Helsingborg
After enjoying the view and learning more about Kärnan's history, we continued our day with a stroll along Helsingborg's most famous shopping street, Kullagatan. The street is filled with shops, cafes, and restaurants, making it a perfect place for a relaxing walk and some shopping.
To end our day, we visited the cozy 1950s-themed café, Ebbas Fik. The café offered a nostalgic atmosphere with retro decor and classic pastries. We enjoyed a cup of coffee and some delicious cakes while reflecting on our day and all that we had seen and experienced.
Our visit to Kärnan and our afternoon in Helsingborg was a memorable experience. Kärnan gave us a deeper understanding of the city's history and offered a fantastic view of the landscape. Strolling along Kullagatan and ending the day at Ebbas Fik was the perfect conclusion. We look forward to returning to Helsingborg and exploring even more of what this historical city has to offer.
