Nestled in the heart of the stunning Skåne countryside, Övedskloster Castle stands as a beautiful testament to Swedish history and heritage. This magnificent estate, with roots tracing back to the 12th century, invites visitors to step back in time and immerse themselves in the serene beauty of southern Sweden.
A Glimpse into History
Övedskloster has a long and fascinating history dating back to the 12th century when it was founded as a monastery by Archbishop Eskil in Lund. During the Reformation in the 16th century, the monastery was dissolved and the estate was taken over by the Danish crown. In 1753, Övedskloster was purchased by Hans Ramel, one of the largest landowners in Skåne, who rebuilt the castle in French Rococo style. Today, the castle is a private cultural heritage site still owned by the Ramel family.
Exploring the Grounds
Visitors can enjoy the beautiful park and gardens. Upon arriving, you are greeted by the grandeur of the castle's courtyard. From there, a set of charming stairs leads down to an expansive garden and park area. The garden, with its well-preserved flower stands, a fountain and diverse plant life, is a delightful place to wander and relax.
A Delightful Café Experience
After exploring the gardens, a visit to the on-site café is a must. Whether you prefer a steaming cup of coffee or a delicious waffle with your favorite topping, the café offers a perfect spot to unwind. On a sunny day, there's nothing quite like enjoying your coffee outdoors, basking in the peaceful ambiance of the estate.
Shopping for Treasures
Before heading home, don't forget to stop by the on-site shop, Slottsmagnolian. Here, you can find a variety of plants, charming decorations, and unique presents. We loved browsing the selection and found some beautiful decorations that now add a touch of Övedskloster's charm to our balcony back in Malmö.
A Memorable Visit
The beautiful garden Övedskloster Castle provided a tranquil escape, and we enjoyed following the winding path all the way to the scenic Vombsjön lake. The combination of historical intrigue, natural beauty, and delightful local treats made for a perfect day trip. We highly recommend Övedskloster Castle to anyone looking to explore the hidden gems of southern Sweden.
