Exploring the Enchanting Solliden Castle and Gardens, Öland

Our visit to the Solliden Castle amd Gardens in Öland was a delightful experience, filled with beauty, history, and tranquility. Visiting in late August, when Swedish schools had already started and it was off-season, allowed us to enjoy the gardens in a peaceful and serene atmosphere.

A Royal Italian Villa

Solliden Castle, located on the island of Öland, was built by Queen Victoria of Sweden in the early 20th century. Inspired by Axel Munthe's Italian villa San Michele, the castle was completed in 1906. Queen Victoria, who suffered from bronchial problems, sought the milder climate of Öland for relief. Solliden has since been the summer residence of the Swedish royal family, passed down through generations. Today, it remains a cherished retreat for the royals and a popular tourist destination.

A Garden of Sculptures and Art

The Solliden Castle Gardens are a true feast for the eyes, with lovely sculptures and temporary art exhibitions scattered throughout the grounds. Each piece of art adds a unique touch to the garden, creating a harmonious blend of nature and creativity. The beautiful cottage garden, with its vibrant flowers and charming pathways, was a highlight of our visit. The garden's design and layout reflect the elegance and grace of the castle itself, offering stunning views of the summer residence of the Swedish royal family.

The Fucsia Theme

One of the most captivating features of the gardens was the large Swedish May flower art. This intricate and colorful display was a true testament to the beauty of Swedish flora. The fuchsia theme, with its flowering plants and lovely sculptures, added a touch of whimsy and charm to the garden. Queen Victoria had a deep love for this flower, a sentiment that continues with today's royal family. The fuchsia theme was a beautiful homage to her legacy and a delightful sight for all visitors.

Walking through the Solliden Castle Gardens was a serene and relaxing experience. The well-maintained pathways, lush greenery, and vibrant flowers created a tranquil environment that allowed us to unwind and connect with nature. The gardens offer a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, providing a peaceful retreat where one can simply enjoy the beauty of the surroundings.
